Remove the faucet from the sink

Clean the area properly

One of the most important parts of proper sealant of faucets is cleaning it properly. If you didn’t have proper sealant previously then there will be dirt in those areas, as the kitchen environment is wet and hot. So, you need to clean the whole area and the dry it.

So, after removing the nuts clean thoroughly the sink or the counter where the faucets sit. As well as, clean the base of the faucet itself. Check out if the color of that portion is deeper than the exposed portion of the faucets. If it is, then there is dirt.

Also, there could be old sealer at the base of the faucet and grease around it clean it with soapy hot water and a soft cloth available. Then dry the whole area completely so that there remain no water droplets.

After drying the area, you need to add the putty to make a perfect faucet sealant. The best putty is plumbers putty. There are a lot of cheap putty available that are there for different wood and plastic purposes. You need plumber putty, not those wooden putty to do the sealant of the faucets perfectly.

You have to roll adequate plumber’s putty into a rope-like shape which is approximately ¾ inch thick. Now form a ring from the rope with the approximate diameter of each faucet base.

If you have single faucet then form one ring if you have two or more pieces, then make separate pieces for every individual piece.

Inserting the faucet

Inserting the faucet is probably the most crucial part of the whole process. In this stage, you have to press the plumber’s putty on the base of each piece of the faucet. Provide the putty properly on the base that there is no gap remain on it.

Now reinsert the faucet base back into the hole or holes in the sink or the countertop. Now replace the nuts and gaskets back to its place on each piece of the faucet.

After that reconnect the faucet water supply lines and turn on the water flow. Test the seal of the faucet by splashing water around its base. After careful observation, if no water seeps through the sealant, then it is entirely sealed.

Some of the faucets come with individual rings that help to seal them into place. Other faucets may need sealing process at the time of installation. It also may need to be occasionally re-sealed as well to prevent the leakage of the course of time.
